In an effort to navigate a market that remains highly concentrated under Big Tech's dominance, but also ripe for stock pickers, Barclays has dozens of stocks that share similar characteristics to the tech heavyweights. However, some select Big Tech remained fairly strong throughout the sell-off, with stocks like Alphabet and Apple bucking the downtrend. While Big Tech valuations still appear reasonable to Barclays analyst Venu Krishna, he pointed out that they're "not the only game in town," and suggested investors diversify their portfolios to beat their benchmarks. Yet, market returns, earnings upside, and institutional investor exposure remain highly concentrated in Big Tech," Krishna said in a Tuesday note. Aside from allowing investors to diversify, these stocks come with strong fundamentals based on profitability, balance sheet strength, cash conversion, and growth-adjusted valuation characteristics that closely resemble those of Big Tech stocks, the firm said.

Costco and TJX Companies should be able to manage the emerging transition to deflation by leveraging their deep value propositions to get customers to buy more. Average sale prices on other items like TVs have been lower while unit sales have gone higher. Membership fee revenue is some of the glue that allows Costco to keep prices so low. Costco can boost sales in either scenario by "encouraging its members to buy more items to get more savings," Feldman said. Like Costco, Feldman said the off-price retailer would need to increase revenue either through price or number of units.

TJX Companies (TJX) reported better-than-expected fiscal year 2024 third-quarter results on Wednesday, while again raising its outlook for the full fiscal year — prompting us to upgrade the stock to a buy-equivalent rating. Same-store sales were positive in every segment, with results in the Marmaxx and HomeGoods divisions "entirely driven by customer traffic," according to the company. Management was forced to shave the company's fourth-quarter guidance range to reflect a 3 cent-per-share expense that was pushed out from the third quarter to the fourth. The company also reiterated its same-store sales forecast for the fourth quarter, while increasing its same-store sales forecast for the full year. As was the case with TJX's last earnings report, the company's higher-than-expected cost of sales is not cause for concern as it's a function of higher-than-expected sales results.

When TJX Companies (TJX) reports quarterly results this week, we expect the off-price retailer to demonstrate continued momentum on both its top and bottom lines, helped by consumers looking for solid deals in an uncertain economic environment. And we're confident management can deliver a further expansion of gross margins as wary American consumers look for value at TJX's popular off-price chains. "Traffic remains the primary driver for comp in off-price," Barclays said in a recent research note previewing earnings for TJX and peers Ross Stores (ROSS) and Burlington Stores (BURL). Higher profits In addition to delivering higher sales, TJX continues to show improved profitability — a trend we expect to accelerate when the company reports on Wednesday. At the same time, according to Telsey, TJX faces headwinds from incremental store wage and payroll costs.

During second-quarter earnings reports in August and September, nearly two dozen retailers said shrink has continued to weigh on profits. During its second quarter earnings call with analysts, the company said shrink was in line with the year-ago period. Over the last few quarters, more and more retailers have called out shrink as a drain on profits and blamed theft for those losses. Others that loosely blame shrink and theft for plummeting profits without providing much more explanation may be trying to obfuscate internal issues, said Lapinsky. Contrary to other retailers, shrink was the largest drag on Ulta's earnings during fiscal 2022, according to a securities filing.
